Japan beat Brazil last year! What exactly happened in that 3-2?
Many people think Brazil vs. Japan is like “an adult beating a child,” but a friendly match in October 2025 changed everyone’s perceptions.
That match was held in Japan. In the first half, Brazil led 2-0, looking like another routine blowout. But in the second half, everything flipped—Japan scored three goals in a row, turning it around to beat Brazil 3-2! It was Japan’s only win in 14 meetings with Brazil.
What did that victory mean for Japan? It meant the “Blue Samurai” no longer fear Brazil. Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu said plainly ahead of the match: Brazil is coming with an extremely strong revenge mindset this time, and it will be a fierce battle.
Japan’s core problem is injuries. Takefusa Kubo is likely to miss the match due to injury. Starting center-back Ko Itakura, despite a minor injury, is still expected to start. Kubo’s absence deals a major blow to the team’s creativity. But the good news is that Japan’s overall defensive system is already very mature—across three group-stage matches, they conceded only 2 goals. They don’t need to trade attacks with Brazil; they just need to wait for opportunities in the second half, just like last year.
In terms of head-to-head history, the two sides have met 14 times, with Brazil winning 11, drawing 2, and losing 1. There has only been one World Cup meeting, in 2006, when Brazil won 4-1. But the reference value of warm-up matches is limited—tomorrow is the real battlefield.
