Golden Finance News reports that on June 29, according to market sources, an LNG (liquefied natural gas) carrier docked at a U.S.-sanctioned gas storage facility in Russia’s Murmansk region. This was the first time the vessel loaded natural gas that had been added to the blacklist, and it is a further sign of Moscow ignoring Western sanctions while working to expand exports. The “Arctic Express” tanker entered service in 2007 and switched to Russian ownership in May this year. This time, it loaded gas at the Sambu floating storage facility. The storage facility holds gas from the Arctic LNG 2 project; both Sambu and the Arctic LNG 2 project are subject to U.S. sanctions. The shipment indicates that Russia is continuing to expand the size of its fleet to circumvent Western restrictions. According to an analysis of tracking data, at least 21 vessels—including the “Arctic Express”—have been used to transport LNG from sanctioned Russian projects. At present, the biggest obstacle to exports from the Arctic LNG 2 project remains a shortage of vessels capable of delivering the gas to potential buyers.
