Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he will resign in a few weeks and hold early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Vucic said at a rally on Saturday that Serbia is currently at a critical stage of development and needs to maintain political stability and social unity. He will resign in a few weeks and help his Progressive Party win the presidential and parliamentary elections, but he did not specify the exact date for stepping down as president and dissolving parliament.

Vucic was elected president in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022. Under Serbia’s constitution, the presidential term is 5 years and can be renewed once. Vucic previously said in an interview that he does not rule out taking a position as prime minister after leaving office.

In 2024, a train-station ceiling collapse in Serbia killed 16 people, triggering anti-corruption protests that have lasted 18 months, and one of the demands is for early elections.
