Japan Earthquake: A 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Occurred Off the Coast of Iwate Prefecture

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, Japan, and authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.

The Hong Kong Observatory's preliminary analysis shows that the earthquake occurred at 4:21 a.m. Hong Kong time, with its epicenter located about 150 kilometers east-southeast of Aomori.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicenter was in the sea off Iwate Prefecture, at a depth of 40 kilometers. Multiple areas in the Tohoku region of Japan experienced significant shaking, with Shindo 5-weak in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, and Fudai Village, Iwate Prefecture.
