First win in team history + first qualification -- DR Congo makes history
Although Uzbekistan had no hope of advancing in the final round, the result determined whether the other two Asian teams could qualify. In the match against DR Congo, Uzbekistan needed to avoid defeat for both teams to retain their qualification hopes. In the first two matches, Uzbekistan suffered two consecutive losses, scoring only one goal. DR Congo had one point from two rounds and needed three points in this match to enter the Round of 32. The situation both sides faced destined this to be a very open attacking battle, with no conservatism at all.
The two teams started with an attacking battle, with a very fast pace of play. Just one minute into the match, Uzbekistan launched a quick attack; Shomurodov scored a goal, but it was ruled offside. Uzbekistan's attack was like a tidal wave. In the 10th minute, the team played a smooth combination; Mozgovoy set up the ball with a backheel, Shomurodov chipped it from the left, and the ball went straight to the far post and into the net, giving the team a 1-0 lead. The goal was wonderful, but not unexpected; DR Congo's midfield had no defensive capability.
In the 18th minute, Mbuluku went solo, volleying inside the box to equalize, but the goal was disallowed due to a prior foul. In the first half, the two teams were basically evenly matched. South Korea was undoubtedly very focused on this match; if the score remained as at halftime, it would be very favorable for South Korea. Uzbekistan's head coach Cannavaro also did not want to end this World Cup with three consecutive defeats. The second half was a huge test of stamina for both teams. With the water break afterwards, there were many variables.
In the second half, Uzbekistan immediately received an unnecessary yellow card. In the 48th minute, DR Congo intercepted the ball, pushed forward, and launched an attack. Siponga broke through and passed back in a triangle, but his teammate was not in position. The attack seemed not to result in a shot, but from the interception and advance, Uzbekistan had no answer. If not for DR Congo players' rough technique, they would not have been able to hold this ball. In the 51st minute, Shomurodov received the ball and made another clever shot, but it just went wide.
DR Congo had the momentum but could not score. They had possession but handled the ball too roughly and could not create great chances. Uzbekistan showed great resilience and concentrated defense. However, even the most careful plan may have a flaw. In the 66th minute, Khusanov fouled inside the box and conceded a penalty. Visa calmly converted it, leveling the score at 1-1. With this goal, DR Congo grew bolder. In the 78th minute, Mayele scrambled for the ball at the doorstep and scored the go-ahead goal. The match situation and the ranking for the best third-placed teams completely changed.
Visa scored another goal in the dying moments to seal the victory, completing a brace. After conceding first, DR Congo came back to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1. Having only one point after the first two rounds, they ended with four points and qualified for the Round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams. They will face England. It was a last-minute entry into the knockout stage, and this match gave them their first World Cup win and first qualification. Uzbekistan was eliminated, and South Korea's dream was also shattered, as they failed to advance. It can only be said that South Korea let the opportunity slip away. The World Cup group stage is nearing its end, and the final suspense lies in the rankings of the teams, which will determine the specific matchups.
