OpenAI Unveils First Chip Jalapeño: 9-Month Tape-Out, Plans Gigawatt-Level Deployment by End of 2026

According to monitoring by Beating, OpenAI has launched its first chip, Jalapeño, specifically designed for accelerating inference in large language models (LLMs). OpenAI is responsible for the chip's architecture and algorithm design, collaborating with Broadcom and Celestica to advance industrial-scale production. Jalapeño aims to directly enhance the performance speed and reduce computational costs for ChatGPT, Codex, API interfaces, and future intelligent agent products. Thanks to OpenAI's cutting-edge AI models assisting in the design, Jalapeño achieved tape-out just 9 months after its initial conception, setting a record for the fastest development of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The chip employs a co-design of algorithms and hardware, restructuring around a dedicated core for large language models, data movement, and network architecture, achieving practical utilization rates close to theoretical hardware limits. The first engineering samples have successfully run workloads such as GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark under target frequency and power consumption in the lab, with early tests showing significant energy efficiency improvements over existing top-tier computing devices. In the technology supply chain, Broadcom is primarily responsible for the silicon implementation and network connectivity of Jalapeño, integrating the Tomahawk chip, while Celestica provides support for board, rack, and system integration. As the first product in a multi-generational computing platform roadmap, Jalapeño is set for initial large-scale deployment in gigawatt-level super-large data centers in collaboration with partners like Microsoft by the end of 2026, aimed at expanding full-stack platform capabilities and reducing inference costs.
