OpenRouter: The gap between open-source large models in China and the US and the closed-source frontier is only 3 to 6 months.

CoinWorld News reports that OpenRouter has disclosed that the performance gap between open-source large models from China and the U.S. and closed-source frontier models has stabilized at 3 to 6 months. Over the past 18 months, frontier closed-source labs have failed to widen the gap as expected, while new players from China and the U.S. have accelerated “plug-and-play” substitution with high cost-effectiveness. Released just two months ago, Deepseek v4 Flash has already become the top choice for substitution: with 284 billion parameters, it achieved a 79.0% score on the swe-bench verified evaluation, approaching GPT-5.5. Its input/output pricing is $0.14/$0.28 per million tokens, about 150 times cheaper than GPT-5.5. GLM 5.2, released by Zhipu in June 2026, ranks first in the open-source weight intelligence index and is on par with GPT-5.5 in real-agent evaluations, becoming an alternative for long-range programming planning. OpenRouter emphasized that although closed-source models will continue to advance, the token cost at a fixed intelligence level will keep trending lower, giving enterprises room for cost optimization.

OpenRouter's data has always been accurate, and this trend is definitely good for small and medium-sized developers.

The stable 3–6 month gap indicates that the marginal benefits of that closed-source approach of piling resources are diminishing.

GLM 5.2 long-range programming planning can compete with GPT-5.5? Zhipu is playing it close to the chest this time.
