U.S. lifts ban, allows Anthropic to open Mythos model to some companies.
According to Semafor, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Anthropic on Friday, lifting the ban on Anthropic's powerful AI model, Claude Mythos 5, allowing Anthropic to release the product to over 100 U.S. institutions, including large corporations and government agencies.
The letter noted that Anthropic has committed to working with the U.S. government to develop protocols, standards, and release plans for the model.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. government imposed export controls on Mythos, leading to the shutdown of the model and its derivative, Fable 5. Amazon and other companies had previously warned that these models could be maliciously cracked and used for other purposes.
It is reported that the U.S. expressed concerns about Mythos being provided to partners with close ties to China, referring specifically to a South Korean telecommunications operator.
