Portugal's Offensive Firepower – The "Water" Behind the 5-0 Thrashing

Portugal's last match was a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, with Ronaldo scoring a brace, looking unstoppable. But brothers, the true value of this big win has to be questioned.

What level of team is Uzbekistan? Ranked outside the top 50 in the world, playing in their first World Cup. Portugal's total squad value is more than ten times theirs. Beating such an opponent 5-0 only proves that "they won a game they were supposed to win," not that "Portugal is already invincible."

What really reveals the issue is the 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first round. The DRC is ranked around 60th in the world, two or three tiers below Colombia in strength. Yet Portugal had 75% possession all match but only 7 shots and 1 on target. Facing a parked bus, Portugal's attack often falls into the trap of "controlling the ball to death."

Portugal's offense relies too heavily on the passing connections of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. If these two are neutralized, upfront Ronaldo and Leão struggle to get shooting opportunities. Colombia's defensive strategy is very clear: cut off Bruno Fernandes' passing lanes and force Portugal's attack into one-on-one situations.

Moreover, Portugal's defense also has vulnerabilities. Although Rúben Dias has returned from injury, his absence in the first round exposed issues with center-back rotation. Left-back Mendes is not fully fit. Colombia's Díaz is extremely fast, specifically targeting the space behind the full-backs. When Portugal pushes everyone forward to attack, the space behind them becomes an ATM for Colombia.

A 5-0 looks beautiful, but the truly revealing match is that 1-1 draw.
