John Bolton, former U.S. National Security Advisor, pleaded guilty on Friday in a federal court in Maryland to mishandling classified information. Prosecutors said Bolton faces up to five years in prison and has agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine.

In his plea agreement, Bolton admitted to sharing some classified notes with relatives while writing his memoir. U.S. media reported that the FBI searched Bolton's home and office last August, seizing multiple documents marked as classified or secret.

Bolton served as National Security Advisor during Trump's first term but was fired after just over a year due to disagreements with Trump. In his memoir published in 2020, Bolton sharply criticized Trump, who claimed the book contained highly classified information and that Bolton had not received approval to publish it.

When indicted last October, Bolton accused Trump of using the lawsuit to target political opponents.
