Nineteen teams have advanced to the Round of 32! One article reviews the World Cup group-stage knockout qualification scenarios
The World Cup group stage is past the halfway point
The top two teams in Groups A, B, C, D, E, and F
Secure knockout tickets with confidence
Meanwhile, multiple teams in other groups rely on two consecutive wins
To lock in qualification early
This one article shows you how the group-stage knockout qualification picture looks
The group stage for Groups A–F wraps up
Nineteen of the 32 spots have been determined for the World Cup
The 48 teams will be split into 12 groups (4 teams per group). The top two teams in each group advance directly, and the eight best third-place teams are added to form the Round of 32 knockout stage. At present, the schedules for Groups A, B, C, D, E, and F have all concluded, confirming 19 spots.
Group A: Mexico, South Africa
△ Mexico 3-0 Czech Republic — finishing the group with a win streak and taking first place to advance.
Mexico finished first in the group and South Africa finished second; both advanced. Mexico won all three matches with zero goals conceded to firmly secure the top spot. South Africa snatched second place with a last-round knockout of South Korea, marking their first-ever appearance in a World Cup knockout stage. South Korea finished third in the group, with qualification still uncertain. Czech Republic finished bottom and was eliminated.
Group B: Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina
△ Swiss player Manzambi scores a brace off the bench
The group winner Switzerland and the runner-up Canada both advance together. Switzerland took first place with 2 wins and 1 draw. Host nation Canada secured second place based on goal difference. Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1. FIFA World Cup officials confirmed that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s record is better than those of third-place teams from four other groups, making them the first team to qualify for the knockout stage as a third-place finisher. Qatar finished bottom and went out.
Group C: Brazil, Morocco
△ Brazil 3-0 Scotland
Group winner Brazil and runner-up Morocco both advanced smoothly. Both teams finished with 2 wins and 1 draw, remaining unbeaten and firmly occupying the top two spots. Scotland finished third in the group, leaving qualification in doubt. Haiti lost all three matches and were eliminated.
Group D: United States, Australia
△ Turkey beat the United States 3-2 with a last-gasp winner, but the United States still advanced as group leader.
The United States won twice in a row to secure first place in the group early. Australia advanced to the knockout stage in second place based on goal difference. Paraguay finished third, with qualification still pending. In the final round, Turkey beat the United States 3-2. Although they were unfortunately eliminated at the group stage, their resilient performance is still worthy of applause.
Group E: Germany, Ecuador, Côte d'Ivoire
△ Ecuador overturns Germany to win 2-1
Germany advanced to the Round of 32 as group winner with 2 wins and 1 loss (6 points). Côte d'Ivoire advanced to the Round of 32 as group runner-up with two wins and one loss. Ecuador earned 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss for 4 points, already making it into the top eight best third-place teams by record, successfully securing a qualification spot. Curaçao missed out on the knockout stage.
Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden
△ Netherlands beat Tunisia 3-1 to win the group
The Netherlands won the group with three matches: two wins and one draw. Japan and Sweden drew 1-1, taking one point each; Japan locked in second place and advanced to the knockout stage. Sweden finished with 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss for 4 points, placing among the eight best third-place teams and successfully earning a qualification spot. Tunisia lost all three matches, finished bottom with 0 points, and was eliminated.
△ Norway 4-1 beats Iraq
In Groups I, J, and K, only the first two rounds have been played, but multiple strong teams have already locked in the top two spots with two consecutive wins, advancing to the Round of 32 knockout stage:
Group I: France and Norway both win their second straight matches; the two teams directly secure the top two spots and advance together;
Group J: Argentina earns 6 points from two consecutive wins, locking in first place early;
Group K: Colombia earns 6 points from two consecutive wins, locking in first place early.
For Groups G, H, and L, no teams have advanced early yet; the final-round matchups will directly determine group rankings and qualification spots.
