My Prediction: Belgium 4-0 New Zealand
Polymarket:
• New Zealand 16.67x / 6% • Draw 8.33x / 12% • Belgium 1.20x / 83%
24H volume: $2.21M
This is the biggest mismatch so far. 83% Belgium at 1.20x tells you everything. New Zealand needs a miracle. I see a one-sided game where Belgium’s technical level ends this by halftime.
New Zealand – Strengths / Weaknesses
Strengths: Work rate and set pieces. Chris Wood is a Premier League striker, elite in the air, and can bully defenders if service is right. Winston Reid leadership is gone but Tommy Smith and Michael Boxall are physical CBs. They defend deep, stay compact, and make you play in front of them. On corners and free kicks they are dangerous. No pressure, they play free.
Weaknesses: Everything else. No one in midfield can keep the ball under Belgium’s press. Joe Bell and Marko Stamenic will be chasing shadows against De Bruyne and Tielemans. Fullbacks struggle badly 1v1 vs Doku and Bakayoko. Squad is 80% A-League level. Once they concede, the plan collapses. Keeper Alex Paulsen has zero experience at this tempo. If Belgium scores early, this gets ugly.
Belgium – Strengths / Weaknesses
Strengths: Top-5 talent gap. Kevin De Bruyne is still a cheat code between lines. Jérémy Doku and Johan Bakayoko are unplayable 1v1 at this level. Romelu Lukaku destroys defenders like Boxall physically. Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans control midfield without breaking sweat. Tedesco’s system creates overloads wide and floods the box. Bench has Trossard, Openda, De Ketelaere. They can score 5 and not notice.
Weaknesses: Defense can switch off at 3-0. Vertonghen is 39, Wout Faes makes mistakes under no pressure. If they get too casual, Wood can nick a header. But they need to be 4 goals up to get that casual. Also, sometimes Belgium overplays instead of shooting.
Match scenario
Belgium comes out fast. They know goal difference matters in groups.
9’ GOAL 1-0 Belgium: Doku beats his man, cuts back, De Bruyne first time into the corner.
New Zealand tries to respond but cannot string 3 passes together.
22’ GOAL 2-0 Belgium: Lukaku holds up, lays off, Tielemans hits it from 20 yards, keeper no chance.
Game is over.
41’ GOAL 3-0 Belgium: Corner, Lukaku header, simple.
Second half Belgium rotates. 68’ GOAL 4-0 Belgium: Openda runs in behind, slots past Paulsen.
New Zealand gets one header wide from Wood at 81’. That is it. Belgium could score 6 if they want.
Score: Belgium 4-0 New Zealand
Odds and strategy
Belgium 1.20x is unplayable straight. My model: 85% Belgium, 11% Draw, 4% New Zealand. Value is in handicaps. Belgium -2.5 around 1.95x is the play. Belgium Win to Nil around 1.65x is also strong. New Zealand averages 0.4 xG vs top-20 teams. Over 3.5 is live if Belgium wants it. New Zealand 16.67x and Draw 8.33x are donation tickets. Only way NZ scores is a set piece + mistake.
Summary: This is men vs boys. Belgium’s golden generation is old, but against New Zealand it looks young. Speed, technique, and tactics are three levels higher. Unless Belgium gets 2 red cards, this is a 4-0 statement win.
