US government requires OpenAI's GPT-5.6 to adopt limited preview release and approve access on a per-customer basis

After OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, the US government required OpenAI to restrict the initial release scope of the GPT-5.6 model, opening it only to select partners, and requiring access approval on a per-customer basis, citing the model's advanced capabilities.

This intervention also involves agencies including the US National Cyber Director's Office and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, which will participate in additional cybersecurity testing.

This approach is similar to previous restrictions imposed on Anthropic's models, and also reflects the rising regulatory scrutiny by the US government on the release of frontier AI models.
