Turkey’s “goal drought”—66 shots, 0 goals, the second-longest record in World Cup history
Brothers, let me tell you a stat that you might not believe—Turkey has already gone 66 consecutive shots without a goal in this World Cup.
66 times. Counting the last 4 shots from the 2002 World Cup, plus the 62 shots from this year’s two matches, Turkey has gone a full 66 attempts without getting a single goal. This is the second-longest goal drought record in World Cup history, only behind Algeria.
In the opening match against Australia, Turkey had over 75% possession and dominated in shots, but lost 0-2. In the next match against Paraguay, the opponent scored at 1 minute 04 seconds into the game, and then got a player sent off during first-half stoppage time. Turkey played the entire match with 11 against 10, had as much as 78.6% possession, pressed the game the whole time, and took 32 shots—so what was the result? 0-1. 32 shots—couldn’t get a goal. 11 against 10—couldn’t score. This isn’t a matter of luck; it’s a matter of ability.
Where does the problem with Turkey lie? There’s no consistent finisher. Bayern’s Güler had 12 shots with only 1 on target, and expected goals were only 0.45. Yıldız and Çalhanoğlu are both technical players, but they don’t have that kind of striker who can deliver the decisive blow in the box. No matter how much you dominate possession or how beautiful your passing is, if your final touch still can’t find the net, it’s all for nothing.
In this match against the United States, Turkey’s objective is just one—break the goal drought. 66 shots, 0 goals—this record is too embarrassing. If they still can’t score in the final match and go home, these guys will get roasted by fans back home. So Turkey will definitely go all-out attacking from the first minute, with a clear goal—score one, even if it’s just one.
