According to Chosun Ilbo, 22 bitcoins (currently worth about 2.2 billion Korean won) that the Seoul Gangnam Police Station had previously seized and stored in connection with a virtual asset financial hacking case have gone missing. Investigations show that, at the time, the police did not put the bitcoins into a cold wallet managed by the police; instead, they directly kept the original offline electronic wallet (cold wallet) provided by the person involved in the case. This allowed the holder to restore the funds externally using the seed phrase and steal the assets. Despite the huge amount involved, the police have currently not taken any oversight or disciplinary action against the relevant responsible management personnel. An insider noted that the police had internally discussed at the time that the seized bitcoins should be stored in the police’s own cold wallet and properly sealed, but the Gangnam Police Station did not adopt this recommendation. The “exempt” handling has triggered internal and public questions about serious dereliction of duty in the management of the seized items.

They discussed internally about changing the wallet but didn't follow through; this blame-shifting is faster than on-chain transfers.

2.2 billion Korean won disappears just like that, and the person in charge doesn't even need to write an apology, this job is more secure than my private key.

Can a cold wallet still be recovered remotely using a mnemonic phrase? Even my grandma couldn't do this operation.
