Gold Financial reports that on June 24th, Adrian Boafo, supported by the Political Action Committee (PAC) Protect Progress of the cryptocurrency industry, won the Democratic primary in Maryland, USA, on Tuesday. According to the Associated Press, this is seen as a significant victory for the cryptocurrency support camp.
Boafo is currently a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and has received strong backing from Protect Progress. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, Protect Progress invested $5.5 million in this campaign, most of which was used to support Boafo.
Media reports indicate that by June 3rd, external groups had spent approximately $8.8 million on Boafo’s campaign. These include: Protect Progress: $1.9 million, United Democracy Project: $1.5 million, which is a super PAC associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Boafo previously served as a federal government lobbyist for Oracle, a background that may have helped him gain support from cryptocurrency and technology industry political groups. Oracle is a cloud infrastructure provider whose services are used by many crypto exchanges and DeFi projects.
