🇺🇸🇮🇷 First Round of US-Iran Talks Concludes – A Fragile Foundation Laid

On June 21, the first round of high-level US-Iran talks under the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding wrapped up at the historic Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland. The delegations – led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with Pakistan and Qatar as mediators – sat for roughly 80 minutes of direct negotiations before suspending for internal consultations.

But that short session was only the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, negotiations stretched across Sunday and into the early hours of Monday – what Iranian media described as 18 hours of "intensive" talks.

🤝 What actually came out of it?

Despite the rocky backdrop – Trump had threatened military action against Iran just hours earlier, and Tehran briefly suspended talks in protest – mediators Pakistan and Qatar issued a joint statement hailing "encouraging progress". Key outcomes include:

🔹 A 60‑day roadmap toward a final peace deal, with technical talks continuing this week at Bürgenstock

🔹 A High‑Level Committee to provide political oversight, with working groups on nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring, and dispute resolution

🔹 A "de‑confliction cell" involving Lebanon and facilitated by mediators to ensure the ceasefire in Lebanon holds

🔹 A communication line between Tehran and Washington to avoid incidents and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz

⚡ The 800‑pound gorilla in the room: Hormuz

Iran had effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz after US‑Israeli strikes on February 28 – and briefly closed it again just days before the talks. But Vance declared on Monday that the Strait is now open, with crude oil and natural gas flowing through. Some 71 confirmed transits were recorded over the weekend.

Trump, watching from the Oval Office, warned that the US could "take over" the Strait if no deal is reached – but also talked up the reopening as a chance to create "an oil gusher".

🇱🇧 Lebanon: the real test

Iran made clear from the start: Lebanon was the immediate priority – nuclear issues were not even discussed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the new de‑confliction cell the "1st real test" of the negotiations. The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which has killed thousands and displaced millions since early March, remains the most fragile thread in this diplomatic tapestry.

💵 The money moves

The US Treasury issued a 60‑day license waiving sanctions on Iranian oil – notably allowing Iranian oil to be imported into the US for the first time since the 1990s. Iran's Araghchi confirmed that oil exports are waived, the blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and a major reconstruction plan launched for Iran.
