Messi sets an awkward record—becomes the "Penalty Miss King" of the World Cup
In the second round of the World Cup group stage, Argentina faced Austria. Messi missed a penalty, making him the player with the most missed penalties in World Cup history with three.
In the 4th minute of the match, Lautaro broke into the penalty area alone but was tackled down by Schlager and Bösing, and after a slow-motion review, the referee awarded a penalty. Messi took the penalty with his left foot and shot wide, marking his 33rd missed penalty in his career.
At the same time, following his misses against Iceland in 2019 and Poland in 2022, this was Messi’s third missed penalty in the World Cup, surpassing Ghanaian forward Gyan to become the player with the most missed penalties in World Cup history. Additionally, Messi has taken 7 penalties as the main taker, the most in World Cup history.
Subsequently, Messi once again missed a good scoring opportunity. In the 20th minute, Messi had a one-on-one chance inside the penalty area but hesitated in handling the ball, allowing Alaba to intercept, and Schläger blocked the shot with his foot. In the first 20 minutes of the match, Messi only completed 3 passes, lost the ball 4 times, and also missed a penalty.
After scoring a hat-trick in his first World Cup match and tying Klose’s record, Messi, in the second group stage match, missed a penalty again, awkwardly becoming the World Cup’s penalty miss king!
