CryptoWorld News reports that Trump signed two executive orders on Monday to promote the development of quantum computers and establish defenses to protect existing encryption technologies.

Executive Order 14411 aims to produce large-scale quantum computers, with plans to deliver at least one at a Department of Energy facility and to open it to the scientific community as much as possible. The order also requires the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy quantum sensors by 2028 and to develop related training and supply-chain plans.

Executive Order 14409 focuses on the threat posed to existing encryption once quantum computers become sufficiently powerful, requiring federal agencies to migrate their sensitive systems to post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2030.

Quantum computing has sparked widespread attention in the encryption industry, with Google researchers previously saying that powerful quantum computers could crack the Bitcoin blockchain with far less computational power than expected.

That paper from Google is indeed impressive, but it will probably take a few more years before it becomes practical.

The 2030 migration deadline is quite tight, and federal agencies are feeling overwhelmed.
