CryptoWorld News, citing Reuters, reports that due to India shifting to higher-cost suppliers to make up for supply disruptions in the Middle East, India’s LPG imports from the United States in June are expected to exceed 1 million tons, setting a record high. Before the US-Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, 90% of India’s LPG import volume relied on Middle Eastern producing countries, with monthly imports of about 2 million tons. India originally planned to increase its share of U.S. LPG procurement to about 10% to help rebalance trade with the United States. After the Strait’s closure, spot market purchases from the U.S. accelerated noticeably. Insiders say Indian refiners bought an unprecedented amount of LPG at higher premiums, and the government’s top priority is to ensure cooking gas supply is not interrupted. However, partial reopening of parts of the Strait in the coming months is expected to improve LPG supply from the Middle East, which will help reduce prices.

The shift from relying 90% on the Middle East to proactively giving 10% to the United States is happening faster than expected.

With the Strait reopened, Middle Eastern goods are coming back—if prices crash, what are we going to do about the American gas we’ve stockpiled at high prices?

The 10% target looks modest, but the refinery's premium purchase is really painful, and the livelihood accounts are hard to calculate.

India's skillful energy diversification play, with U.S. LPG doubling directly, is a textbook example of hedging geopolitical risks.
