Everything is fate! My family is quite powerful, running a restaurant. They married late but had a good relationship, and after having a son, their business became surprisingly prosperous. But later they found out that the son was simple-minded.
However, with such wealth at home, someone has to inherit it. Even if there’s no son, having a daughter would be fine too.
So, they started trying to conceive at an advanced age. The wife finally got pregnant at forty, but was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid. The doctor repeatedly advised her to rest and recuperate, but in the end, not only was the baby lost, but she also suffered a great ordeal, and her uterus was removed, completely ending the desire to bear children.
Later, the wife even grit her teeth and subtly hinted at her husband to find someone outside to have a child. But the man, due to heavy drinking and socializing in his early years, was in poor health and unable to conceive.
Eventually, through matchmaking, they adopted a boy from a distant relative’s family. When he first arrived, he was chubby, white, and adorable, with a lively head.
The relatives were so fond of him they almost wanted to give their hearts to him, buying him the best and most expensive food, clothes, and supplies.
But strangely, whether it was because of water and soil incompatibility or some other issue, ever since this child came into the family, he kept falling ill every few days—high fever that wouldn’t go down, or allergic shock. They went to the hospital again and again, spending money like water, but the child's face grew paler and paler.
The elders in the family privately muttered that the child had a weak fate, unable to carry the family’s wealth, and that raising him might bring disaster. Sure enough, within less than half a year, the child almost didn’t survive a serious illness.
Seeing the pitiful child on the hospital bed, the relatives finally got scared and tearfully sent him back to his original family, giving them some money.
After hearing this, the child was gradually nurtured back at home.
Now, the relatives’ restaurant is growing bigger and bigger, with branches opening in the city. Their family is immensely wealthy, living in the best villas, but inside that house, there is only a simple-minded, oblivious son.
A few years ago, I went to their place for a meal. Watching the relatives busy serving guests, with a professional smile on their faces, but in their eyes, a sense of emptiness and indescribable sadness always flickered. They had obtained the wealth most people dream of, but lacked the “fate of children.”
But later, they also came to accept it. Just quietly living with the simple-minded child, trying to live longer, so they can arrange for his old age. As for passing on the family line, forget it—those bad genes should end with the son, and not be passed down anymore.
There’s a saying: “Heaven’s way avoids fullness, human way avoids perfection.” All things in the world often follow a subtle balance: gaining fame and fortune might cost the warmth of family affection; climbing to the peak of a career inevitably brings some loneliness. Human hands only have two, how can they hold all the good things in the world? If fate offers a gift, it must also take away secretly. This is probably the fairest law of life. Since we cannot have children to fill our knees, it’s better to let go of obsession and cultivate a peaceful mind.
Rather than torment ourselves over what we cannot obtain, it’s better to develop compassion through possession. Just as they eventually understood, living peacefully with the simple-minded son and ending the bloodline’s cause and effect in this generation might be a kind of enlightenment.
Contentment brings happiness; knowing enough is always enough. This may be the most genuine form of human life. Friends, do you think this is the truth?
