Breaking news: Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has passed away at the age of 100. His cause of death was complications from Parkinson’s disease.

He served as head of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006, spanning the presidencies of four leaders: Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush.
Greenspan had a rather unconventional habit in his lifetime—he liked to watch men’s underwear sales to gauge Americans’ consumption status.
He believed that when the economy was doing poorly, even essential items like men’s underwear that people are supposed to replace regularly would be put off and not bought, since others couldn’t see it, so people would save wherever they could.
The most classic example is that after the 2008 financial crisis, the growth rate of men’s underwear sales in America noticeably slowed; by the end of January 2009, sales had actually declined by 12%.
By 2011, when the economy had clearly rebounded, annual men’s underwear sales increased again by 6.6%.
