HR asked, "What is your current salary?"


I said, "18k."
HR said, "Our maximum is 23k, is that okay?"
I nodded. I was naive.
Later I found out that the budget for that position was 28k. A full 8k less per month, nearly 100k a year. Just because I didn't speak up.
After that job change, I learned to be smarter. When HR asked about my salary expectations, I first asked back, "What is the approximate budget range for this position?"
Silence for three seconds.
HR said, "25k to 30k."
I said, "Then I expect 30k, let's discuss further."
In the end, I settled for 28k × 14 months.
Negotiating salary isn't about being thick-skinned; it's about having the right information. If you don't know the market rate and go into negotiations, you're the one losing, not HR.
