Father's Day "Model Dad" – Belgian International Withdraws from Tournament to Be with Wife During Childbirth

Early morning on June 22nd, during the second match of the 2026 World Cup North America, Central America, and Mexico group stage, Belgium team, down a player in the second half, ultimately drew 0-0 with Iran. After two rounds, the "Red Devils of Europe" only have 2 points, and their qualification prospects have become very grim.

Amid the team's poor performance, a personal decision by star Jeremy Doku also sparked controversy.

Doku plans to temporarily leave the Belgium national team training camp during his wife’s labor to return home and accompany his wife as they welcome their first child. Since his wife Cyrine’s due date is in the second week of July, this timing may coincide with the quarter-finals stage of the World Cup.

Facing external criticism, the Manchester City winger was very firm: "This is my first child, and I definitely want to be by her side." Doku previously said in an interview, "If you ask me what I want most, no one wants to miss the moment their first child is born."

However, he also emphasized that he understands the situation faced by the national team and the football association: "Football involves many factors. I know the federation supports players, and I understand their position. We will do our best to find the best solution."

Nevertheless, this decision was met with fierce criticism from some media figures. French "L'Équipe" host François Pielon openly stated that if Doku leaves the World Cup field for the birth of his child, it would be a "disgusting decision."

She said, "The World Cup is the dream of countless footballers throughout their lives; many may never have a second chance. Giving up the World Cup to witness the birth of a child is hard to understand."

Pielon even made comments such as "Fathers are useless during childbirth" and "You can't cut the umbilical cord, and you shouldn't miss the World Cup."

This statement quickly sparked a backlash, with many fans and netizens believing that she not only insulted Doku but also belittled the role and responsibility of fathers in the family.

England forward Oli Watkins also publicly supported Doku, bluntly stating, "This is none of anyone else's business," and backing Doku’s priority to care for his family and welcome new life.

So, the question is, everyone, which side do you stand on? Little God of Wealth thinks Doku’s decision is understandable, but fighting for the country might be a better choice. However, the most urgent question now is, with Belgium’s current state, can they still reach the quarter-finals? 😂
