Multiple matches of the 2026 North America, Mexico, and Canada World Cup group stage took place yesterday, with several strong teams facing key battles. The qualification landscape across groups experienced significant changes, with games ranging from high-scoring blowouts to exciting comebacks and dull draws.
In Group F, the spotlight was on the match between the Netherlands and Sweden. The orange army unleashed their full attacking firepower, with Brobbey and Gakpo each scoring twice, and Sommerweil adding a final touch. Ultimately, the Netherlands won 5-1. Sweden only managed to score a consolation goal by Elanga. This heavy defeat greatly reduced their goal difference and increased pressure on their qualification hopes, while the Netherlands secured top spot in the group with a commanding victory.
Japan faced Tunisia in a milestone match, maintaining control of possession and passing rhythm throughout the game. They completely dominated both offensively and defensively, winning 4-0 with a clean sheet. Tunisia's second consecutive loss dashed their hopes of advancing early on. Japan, with ample points secured, is now virtually guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage.
Germany's match against Côte d'Ivoire was full of twists and turns. Ivorian midfielder Kessié opened the scoring to give his team the lead. In a critical moment, substitute Ondoua stepped up, scoring two goals and completing a stoppage-time winner, helping Germany overturn a deficit to win 2-1. The team remains undefeated after two matches and has already advanced.
Another match in Group E was relatively dull, with Ecuador creating multiple scoring opportunities but failing to find the net. Curaçao's defense was resilient, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Curaçao earned their first points in World Cup history through this result.
With many different styles of play across the matches, all teams will fight hard for qualification in the final round, making the competition increasingly intense.
