Can Saudi Arabia’s “Argentina Killer” Dawsari shock the world again?
When talking about the Saudi team, there is one name you must know—Salim Dawsari.
At the 2022 World Cup, Saudi Arabia pulled off a major upset by defeating Argentina, and the player who scored the winning goal in the clincher was him. After that match, Dawsari became a national hero in Saudi Arabia. This year, he is still the team’s captain and offensive core. In the first round against Uruguay, he remains Saudi Arabia’s most dangerous player.
Dawsari’s strengths are his pace, his dribbling, and his ability to cut inside and shoot. He typically plays as a left winger—right opposite Spain’s right flank, meaning the side of Yamal and Llorente. If Spain commits men forward in attack, the space behind the right flank will be huge. Once Dawsari gets the ball, it becomes a dangerous counterattack.
Saudi head coach Donis put it plainly: “We will enjoy the match, but we also want to win.” This isn’t empty talk—there is real confidence behind it. Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in 2022, and in the first round of 2026 they held Uruguay to a draw. They have already proven they are not afraid of strong teams.
Spain’s back line must give Dawsari special attention. If he gets a chance on the counter, with his speed and technical ability, Spain’s defenders likely won’t be able to catch him. De La Fuente may need to have the right-back push up less, or ensure the midfielders are ready to provide cover at any moment. If Spain only focuses on attacking and overlooks Dawsari, they could end up paying the price.
