Illinois Signs 0.2% Bitcoin and Crypto Transaction Tax Starting in 2027

Illinois Governor JD Pritzker signed a digital asset tax bill that will impose a 0.2% tax on crypto activity starting January 1, 2027. The tax applies to transfers and purchases tied to activity in Illinois. The Crypto Council for Innovation called the measure the "most punitive digital asset tax" in the country. The Illinois Policy Institute said lawmakers expect the tax to generate as much as $60 million next year.
