The Lebanon-Israel fighting is coming to an end! Three-way representatives from the US, Iran, and Pakistan arrive in Switzerland: Aiming at Israel?
On June 21, local time, according to reports from multiple parties, representatives from three sides—an Iranian negotiating delegation, US Vice President Vance, Pakistani Prime Minister, and others—have all arrived in Switzerland.
So, what are these key figures from these three countries mainly here to do in Switzerland?
Aiming at Israel! Concentrating efforts to resolve the Lebanon-Israel conflict!
Why do we say that?
First, both the US and Iran have made clear that the main purpose of this trip is to end the Israel-Palestine conflict and implement the memorandum of understanding’s top agenda item.
First, on the US side, before Vice President Vance set off for Switzerland, he had already stated explicitly that the focus of US-Iran negotiations is the nuclear issue and a ceasefire in Lebanon.
Vance has repeatedly publicly accused Israel, saying that Israel has only one major ally left in the US—so don’t push your luck any further, and don’t attack Trump!
On Iran’s side, Iranian officials said that ending the Lebanon conflict is the most important item on the agenda for the Iranian delegation this time.
It is clear that the US-Iran negotiation landscape has undergone major changes. Major figures from the US, Pakistan, and Iran have all arrived in Switzerland. One important question is how to respond to Israel stirring things up—because the US, Iran, and Pakistan cannot be led around by Israel.
Israel has repeatedly violated agreements in southern Lebanon and unilaterally escalated the situation in an attempt to pull the US and Iran back into the mire of war.
However, judging from the current situation, Israel’s plan should fail. Because messages from all directions show that, whether it is the US, Iran, or Pakistan, they will focus on resolving the Israel ceasefire first.
First, this is also Item 1 of the 14 provisions in the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
Whether the ceasefire by Israel can be implemented directly affects the subsequent 13 points—whether the process will continue. It also directly affects whether the Strait of Hormuz will be opened, and whether the US military will completely lift the blockade on Iranian ports.
Second, on the evening of the 20th, Iran’s military suddenly announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs further provided an explanation, stating that the underlying reason is Israel’s continued strikes on Lebanon.
At a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Bagheri accused the US of “failing to restrain Israel and violating the memorandum of understanding,” while also being the first to confirm that Iran will send a delegation to Switzerland, and saying that during the meeting it will hold the US accountable for this.
As of early morning on the 21st Tehran time, the Iranian negotiating delegation had arrived in Zurich, Switzerland. Switzerland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that after arriving in Zurich, the Iranian delegation is currently on its way to Bürgenstock, and that this trip is part of implementing the memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran.
Third, US President Trump’s special envoy Wittekov has arrived in Switzerland. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is already in Switzerland as well. Both will take part in the talks.
US Middle East envoy Steve Wittekov and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner take opposing or restrained positions toward Israel’s strikes on Lebanon. They advocate for Israel to maintain a “low profile” and reduce military actions, to support negotiations over the US-Iran peace agreement.
Previously, although some media claimed that Kushner is an “informant” for Israel, in the context of the US-Iran agreement, they are more inclined to end the conflict through diplomatic means rather than supporting Israel in expanding the war.
In response, Netanyahu believes their stance harms Israel’s security interests, and even accused them of “selling out Israel’s brothers,” leading to tension in US-Israel relations.
Fourth, Pakistan firmly opposes Israel’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire and refusal to withdraw troops from Lebanon.
On June 21, local time, the Office of the Pakistani Prime Minister confirmed that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz and Army Chief of Staff Munir will participate in the US-Iran technical-level talks to be held on June 21 at Bürgenstock in Switzerland.
Pakistan strongly condemns and firmly opposes Israel’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire and refusal to withdraw from Lebanon.
As the coordinator of the US-Iran negotiations, Pakistan has also put in painstaking, meticulous efforts for this. Pakistan characterizes Israel’s continued military operations and refusal to withdraw as “acts of aggression” that seriously violate international law, undermine regional peace and stability, and disregard humanitarian principles.
In multilateral arenas such as the United Nations, Pakistan has clearly demanded that Israel immediately and unconditionally withdraw from the occupied territories of Lebanon, stressing that Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity must be respected.
Through diplomatic and political pressure, Pakistan has sharply criticized Israel for unilaterally undermining the agreement’s binding force. Pakistani senior leaders have even used extremely harsh wording—describing Israel as a “cancer,” for example—to express their anger, and called on the international community to take urgent measures to stop Israel’s actions.
Pakistan reiterates that during this difficult period it stands firmly with the Lebanese government and people, supporting their efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and peace and stability .
Fifth, US President Trump is already getting anxious.
Trump has repeatedly blasted Israel, accusing Netanyahu of going too far, saying it has caused too many casualties, and repeatedly criticizing Netanyahu for not being grateful—adding that if it weren’t for Trump saying that Israel has been destroyed by bombing.
However, judging from Israel’s actual actions, there is no sign of restraint. Over June 17, 18, 19, and 20—four consecutive days—Israel kept escalating its bombing of southern Lebanon.
Even so, the US, Iran, and Pakistan have not been led around by Israel’s shelling. If they were to stop negotiations at this point, it would play directly into Israel’s hands. Israel originally wanted to use shelling to sabotage everyone’s negotiation efforts!
Sixth, is there internal infighting in Israel?
According to a report from Israel on the 20th, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz have issued instructions requiring the Israel Defense Forces to cease fire in Lebanon.
However, on the 20th local time, the Israel Defense Forces said that they continued military operations in the “security zone” in southern Lebanon. It is unclear why Netanyahu suddenly notified the Israel Defense Forces to stop firing and stop armed operations, but Israel’s forces have not, at present, carried out the order.
Netanyahu currently views preserving the premiership and avoiding jail as the highest priority. He is actively intensifying policy disagreements with the US, using the Lebanon conflict to divert domestic tensions and lock in his political base.
