If the U.S. and Iran fail to reach an agreement, Trump: Will impose protection fees on the Strait of Hormuz to protect Middle Eastern countries

As the US-Iran nuclear talks commence, Trump threatened on Truth Social: If no agreement is reached after the 60-day ceasefire period, the United States will impose transit fees on the Strait of Hormuz, calling it the "Guardian Angel Service Fee."
(Background summary: Iranian state media announced that after the 60-day free period at the Strait of Hormuz, charges will be implemented, and Van Stein acknowledged negotiations are pending.)
(Additional background: NATO has hinted at protecting the Strait of Hormuz: if the blockade is unresolved by July, they will act; Iran's Hormuz Safe Bitcoin shipping insurance is positioning itself first.)

Trump posted on Truth Social on June 20: "During the 60-day ceasefire between the US and Iran, no transit fees will be charged at the Strait of Hormuz; after the 60 days, if an agreement is not reached, these fees will be collected by the United States." He defined the nature of this fee as: "This is a service fee provided by the United States as the guardian angel of Middle Eastern countries, used to compensate for past, present, and future costs."

The gray area left by the MOU

Earlier this week, both the US and Iran officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a 60-day ceasefire framework.

However, the core provisions of the MOU only specify that the Strait of Hormuz will return to free passage within 60 days, and the US will simultaneously lift maritime sanctions on Iranian ports, but the document does not address a fundamental issue: will Iran ultimately retain control over the strait? This means whether Iran can obtain legal authorization to charge fees after the ceasefire expires.

Previously, Iran’s chief negotiator Ghalibaf publicly stated: "The Strait of Hormuz will not return to pre-war conditions," and Tehran will charge service fees to passing ships. Trump’s post on Truth Social is a direct and firm counter to this.
