BlockBeats News. On June 21, cryptocurrency and technology analysts Miles Deutscher cited Epoch AI Capability Index data to point out that the capability gap between open-source AI models and cutting-edge closed-source large models is rapidly narrowing—about 12 months two years ago, and now compressed to about 4 months.

Judging from its development trajectory, open-source models have moved from Llama 2-70B to catching up with GLM 5.2, Kimi K2.6, and others, while closed-source cutting-edge models have evolved to the GPT-5.5 Pro level. At the current pace of catch-up, Deutscher expects that in another ~6 months, top-tier intelligence at the Claude Fable level will be freely available for public download in an open-source format.

This trend means that the capability advantage—once seen by closed-source giants as a core moat—is rapidly fading, and the rise of the open-source ecosystem may profoundly reshape the landscape of AI business and the competitive dynamics of computing power.
