British media: UK Prime Minister Starmer is expected to announce his resignation as early as next Monday
According to a report on June 21 by *The Observer*, UK Prime Minister Starmer is preparing a timetable for his departure. Previously, Andy Burnham suffered a crushing defeat of the UK Reform Party in the by-election in the Greater Manchester constituency, and will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament next Monday. His supporters claim that if Starmer does not step down on his own initiative, Burnham has already secured the support of more than 201 Labour MPs to launch a leadership challenge against Starmer. This figure has exceeded half of the parliamentary Labour group, meaning Starmer can no longer convince the King that he is able to command the House of Commons’ confidence. It is said that after several rounds of discussions in recent times with cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, union leaders, and party donors, Starmer has concluded that his position in government is no longer secure. Senior Labour figures believe Starmer may make a “clear statement” as early as Monday. A Labour peer close to Starmer said, “He has seen the reality. As he has said, preventing ‘chaos’ can no longer be achieved by staying in office, so there is only one option left. I think he has come to see it as the responsible choice for the country and the party.” Another senior Labour figure said that Starmer currently appears to have “accepted” the reality of resignation.
