On June 20, during the group match between Turkey and Paraguay at the Mexico-Canada-United States World Cup, the tournament’s first special red card was issued. Paraguayan player Almirón raised his hand to cover his mouth while communicating during a standoff with his opponent; after VAR review confirmed it, the referee directly sent him off with a red card. This is the first red card on the World Cup stage caused by “covering the mouth to communicate” since the new 2026 football regulations were introduced, and it quickly sparked heated discussion among fans.
