I haven’t even taken my seat, and the ball is already in the net! Lightning-fast goals in World Cup history
On the morning of June 20, in the second round of Group D at the Paraguay–United States–Mexico World Cup group stage, Paraguay beat Turkey 1-0. Just 65 seconds after kickoff, Paraguayan player Galarza fired a low shot from outside the penalty area into the corner, setting a new record for the fastest goal of this World Cup!
Earlier today, in the second round of Group C, in the match between Scotland and Morocco, 71 seconds after kickoff, Moroccan player Saebari scored. With that goal, Morocco defeated Scotland 1-0.
65 seconds, 71 seconds! Even though these times are already fast enough to be called “lightning,” when placed in the context of World Cup history, they are still far from the limit.
The current record for the fastest goal in World Cup history comes from the 2002 Korea–Japan World Cup: in the third-place playoff between Turkey and South Korea, Turkey’s Hakan Şükür broke a 40-year-long record by scoring against South Korea just 11 seconds into the match.
Aside from the 11-second record, there have been many other “lightning” goals in history (listed in order of goal time):
In the 1962 Chile World Cup, Václav Mašek (former Czechoslovakia), 15 seconds.
In the 1934 Italy World Cup, Ernst Lehner (Germany), 25 seconds.
In the 1982 Spain World Cup, Bryan Robson (England), 28 seconds.
In the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Clint Dempsey (United States), 29 seconds.
