Illinois Signs First U.S. Digital Asset Transaction Tax

Illinois became the first U.S. state to impose a digital asset transaction tax, with SB 3019 levying a 0.2% business tax on brokers. The tax is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027, and generate approximately $60 million in annual revenue. The tax targets business activities rather than profits.
