2026 World Cup Makes History: New Format with 48 Teams Ready to Shake Three Countries

JAKARTA – The biggest football event in the universe, the 2026 World Cup, officially marks a new era in modern football history. For the first time, this prestigious tournament is held in three host countries simultaneously—United States, Canada, and Mexico—and implements a new format involving 48 national teams, up from the previous format of only 32 teams.

This revolutionary step taken by FIFA opens greater opportunities for countries from various confederations that have struggled to reach the final round, including Asia (AFC) and Africa (CAF), which receive significant additional slots.

New Format: More Competitive Group Stage
With a total of 48 teams, the qualifying round will be divided into 12 groups, each consisting of 4 teams. The top two teams from each group, along with the 8 best third-placed teams, will automatically advance to the knockout stage of 32 teams.

This change is predicted to make the tournament's intensity even higher as the number of matches skyrockets to 104 games over approximately 39 days.

Infrastructure and Logistical Challenges
Mexico, which previously hosted in 1970 and 1986, records itself as the first country to host the World Cup three times. Meanwhile, the United States provides most of the stadiums with massive capacities, and Canada is ready to welcome the world in two main cities, Toronto and Vancouver.

Although met with enthusiasm, major challenges loom for the contestants, especially related to travel distances and the significant time zone differences among the three host countries. FIFA itself has confirmed that it has designed regional (cluster) match arrangements to minimize players' physical fatigue caused by long air travel.

Official FIFA Statement:

"The 2026 World Cup is not just about expanding the number of teams but also celebrating the inclusivity of global football. We ensure that all logistical, security, and fairness aspects have been thoroughly prepared to deliver the best tournament in history."

Currently, the World Cup fever is beginning to be felt worldwide. Major surprises from underdog teams are highly anticipated by billions of eyes ready to witness the birth of a new history on North American soil.
