Taiwan's "Health Coin" is coming! Get vaccinated or undergo health checkups to earn points—how to claim and how to use?

The Ministry of Health and Welfare is planning a points reward system under the "Healthy Taiwan" policy. Citizens can accumulate points by undergoing adult health checkups, government-funded cancer screenings, and vaccinations. In the future, these points can be exchanged for health products, sports facilities, or health foods. The first phase has been finalized, adopting a real-name system that is non-transferable, using the "National Health Insurance Health Passbook" app as the platform. The Ministry of Health and Welfare is currently conducting system testing and aims to launch before the start of the school year in September.

Summary of key points

  • "Health Coin" is a points reward system under the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s "Healthy Taiwan" policy, initially focusing on three types of activities: health checkups, cancer screenings, and vaccinations
  • It adopts a real-name system, is non-transferable, and accumulates and exchanges points via the "National Health Insurance Health Passbook" app, applicable to adults aged 18 and above
  • The Ministry of Health and Welfare will conduct system testing in June, aiming to launch in September. Points can be exchanged for health products, sports venues, and health foods

The government will introduce "Health Coins," a points reward system planned by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This system allows people to earn points for engaging in healthy behaviors. Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chong-liang described it as "if you do it, you get coins," meaning that completing adult health checkups, government-funded cancer screenings, and vaccinations will earn you health coins.

These "coins" are not cryptocurrencies and have nothing to do with blockchain technology. They are based on a real-name system, linked to personal identity, and cannot be transferred to others. It functions more like a government-issued "health points card," storing points in your health passbook.

What is Health Coin?

The origin of Health Coin stems from President Lai Ching-te’s vision of "Healthy Taiwan." The Presidential Office established the "Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee," chaired by Lai Ching-te, aiming to reduce the standardized mortality rate of chronic diseases related to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol by one-third by 2030. To stay healthy, instead of waiting to get sick and relying solely on health insurance, the government encourages proactive prevention and health maintenance by investing in preventive care.

Health Coin serves as an "incentive." It converts preventive health behaviors into points, which are stored in the "National Health Insurance Health Passbook" app. Once accumulated to a certain level, they can be exchanged. The platform is a transformation of the existing "Health Go" health habit app, without building a new system. It is designed with a real-name system, no transfer mechanism, limited to adults over 18, and locked to individual use to prevent buying, selling, or laundering points.

How to earn? "If you do it, you get coins"

The first phase has been finalized, based on the concept of "if you do it, you get coins," focusing on three types of healthy behaviors:

  • Adult health checkups: completing preventive health services provided by the government
  • Government-funded cancer screenings: such as colorectal and breast cancer screenings
  • Vaccinations: both government-funded and self-paid are included; the first phase will focus on flu, COVID-19, and pneumococcal vaccines

There is no need for special application to earn points. As long as you complete these activities, upload your data, and it falls into the "Health Passbook," the system will automatically convert it into points. Regarding the points awarded per activity, the Ministry of Health and Welfare previously discussed a model like "100 points per government-funded vaccine shot," but the exact point conversion is still subject to official announcement. Nothing has been finalized yet.

How to use? When will it be launched?

Accumulated points can be used to offset health-related expenses, such as redeeming health foods, sports equipment, or health products, or to pay for gym memberships and sports venues. The Ministry of Health and Welfare is also exploring partnerships with convenience stores for product redemption and aiming to integrate "Health Coins" and "Exercise Coins" into a multi-coin system, making points easier to use.

Initially, the plan was to launch the Health Coin in the first half of the year or even in April, but due to budget review delays in 2026, the launch has been postponed. The latest update is that the first phase has been finalized, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare is conducting redemption system testing this month (June), aiming for an official launch before the start of the school year in September. In other words, the remaining steps are finalizing the system and redemption channels. Details such as redemption items, point-to-value conversion, and whether to set redemption limits are still pending official announcement. We will continue to follow up.
