Former White House AI Advisor Dean Ball joins OpenAI to lead the new frontier policy team
According to Beating Monitoring, former White House AI advisor and senior researcher at the American Innovation Foundation (FAI), Dean Ball, announced that he will officially join OpenAI on July 6 to serve as the head of the newly established “Strategic Futures” team. Ball will report directly to OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon, while also retaining his non-residential senior researcher position at FAI.
The newly established “Strategic Futures” team is a small policy group with a high degree of autonomy. Its core work is to shape cutting-edge AI policy and internal governance. Its specific scope includes disaster risk prevention, recursive self-improvement of large models, the impact of technology on the labor market, and communication with stakeholders such as frontier labs and the U.S. federal government. The team’s responsibilities span both external policy initiatives and the design of internal mechanisms. Its work requires close collaboration with technical R&D personnel, Preparedness teams, the legal team, and national security and global affairs teams.
Dean Ball previously served as a White House AI advisor and helped draft the U.S. government’s AI action plan. In his personal blog, Ball said that joining OpenAI stems from his judgment regarding frontier AI governance. Ball believes that AI will become a brand-new governance technology even as it needs regulation. In the future, the most critical AI governance decisions are likely to be made within laboratories rather than by external institutions. To advance substantive AI policy research, it is necessary to get into the development front line and understand the underlying technology.
The “Strategic Futures” team is currently recruiting interdisciplinary members. Ball revealed that although the team’s work relies closely on understanding underlying technology, it does not strictly require applicants to have professional backgrounds in machine learning or AI policy. Ball hopes to build a team with a multi-disciplinary perspective and heterogeneous knowledge structures, and has already opened external communication channels.
