Crypto World News: Dean Ball, former White House AI adviser and a senior researcher at the American Innovation Foundation (FAI), announced that he will officially join OpenAI on July 6 as the head of the newly established “Strategic Futures” team. The team is a small policy group with a high degree of autonomy. Its core work is to shape cutting-edge AI policy and internal governance. Its specific scope includes preventing catastrophic risks, recursive self-improvement of large models, and the impact of technology on the labor market, among other areas. Ball previously helped draft the U.S. government’s AI action plan. He said that while AI will need to be regulated, it will also become a brand-new governance technology, and the most critical AI governance decisions in the future will likely be made within laboratories rather than by external institutions.

Disaster risk prevention + recursive self-improvement—this team name already sounds so pressuring, like it’s making people feel under tremendous pressure

A small team with high autonomy, in other words: little money, many tasks, but they keep their word.

Making governance decisions within the laboratory? It means setting rules for yourself in the future.

From drafting the government AI action plan to moving to OpenAI for internal governance, this career switch path is quite something.

Started on July 6th, very punctual, just in time for the busy policy period in the second half of the year.
