Iran and the U.S. sign Memorandum of Understanding on key points to watch

In the early hours of June 18 Beijing time, Iran and the U.S. confirmed they have remotely signed the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding," consisting of 14 points. The face-to-face talks scheduled for Friday in Switzerland will still proceed as planned.

Quick overview of the core content:

🔹 Ceasefire and Security: Immediate and permanent ceasefire on all fronts including Lebanon, no use of force against each other, and safeguarding Lebanon's sovereignty.

🔹 Strait of Hormuz: Iran commits to allowing commercial ships free and safe passage through the Persian Gulf to the Oman Sea within 60 days, and to restore normal transit within 30 days. The U.S. simultaneously lifts maritime blockade and fully ends it within 30 days.

🔹 Economic Compensation: The U.S. promises to provide at least $300 billion for Iran's economic reconstruction and to develop an implementation plan.

🔹 Sanctions Relief: The U.S. commits to ending all UN and unilateral sanctions immediately, providing Treasury Department exemptions for Iran's oil exports, and unfreezing restricted Iranian funds.

🔹 Nuclear Issue: Iran reaffirms it will not produce or acquire nuclear weapons, and its enriched material stockpile will be handled through a negotiation mechanism.

🔹 Final Agreement: Both sides pledge to negotiate a final agreement within 60 days, to be confirmed by a binding resolution of the United Nations Security Council.

This is a phased agreement exchanging "ceasefire + open strait + financial compensation + sanctions relief" for Iranian nuclear concessions. Whether future negotiations succeed depends on how the final agreement is set. The Switzerland talks this Friday are worth continued attention. $XAU $CL
