Blockchain company Block of Jack Dorsey has implemented the Builderbot AI tool for automating software development. The system already produces about 15% of the company's total code.

The tool is an orchestrator of AI agents. It is integrated into Slack: the developer tags the bot account and describes the task. Builderbot independently searches for errors, suggests fixes, or creates new features.

Unlike standard assistants, Builderbot has access to the entire Block codebase. This allows an engineer from the Cash App team to make changes to Square's services, which they previously did not work on. The bot automatically pulls tasks from Jira, creates branches in the repository, writes code, and submits Pull Requests.

According to the company, Builderbot performs over 200,000 operations daily. Weekly, the system closes about 1,500 merge requests.

"What used to take months now takes days. The bot handles routine tasks and environment setup, allowing engineers to focus on solving complex problems," said Block's AI capabilities head Brad Aksen.

Block emphasized that the tool only works with source code and system configurations. It does not have access to customer data or payment information.

Builderbot is built on Goose — an open-source framework that Block transferred to the organization Agentic AI Foundation. During development, the company also collaborated with Anthropic on creating the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The company believes that the shift from writing code with AI to "native" neural network-based engineering processes will become a major trend in the IT industry.

Recall that in June, TechCrunch journalists called artificial intelligence a justification for layoffs.
