BlockBeats News, June 18 — U.S. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis and Democratic Senator Rubén Gallego support a non-binding resolution to be introduced on Wednesday, opposing former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) receiving a presidential pardon, sentence reduction, or any form of executive clemency.

The resolution states that, under no circumstances, should SBF receive executive clemency, including a presidential pardon or sentence reduction. It also says that if U.S. President Trump approves SBF’s pardon request, it will “erase his conviction, weaken deterrence, and send a serious wrong signal that large-scale financial fraud perpetrators can escape permanent accountability.” Since the presidential pardon power is granted by the Constitution, the resolution is non-binding.

SBF previously formally applied to Trump for a pardon. Last week, a U.S. federal appellate court upheld his conviction and sentence, leaving only a presidential pardon or an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court as remaining legal options. SBF was convicted in November 2023 on seven felony counts related to the misuse of FTX user funds, and in 2024 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
