SpaceX Adds New Director to the Board, Elon Musk Appoints Roelof Botha as New Member
Less than a week after completing a record-breaking IPO, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk once again strengthens the company's board of directors, appointing longtime ally Roelof Botha as an independent director and audit committee member.
According to a regulatory filing submitted to the SEC on June 16, Botha will assume office immediately, becoming the eighth member of SpaceX's board, while Musk himself serves as Chairman and CEO.
Botha's connection with Musk dates back to the early days of the internet era; he was recruited by Musk to join PayPal in 2000. Subsequently, Botha joined the well-known venture capital firm Sequoia Capital in 2003, was promoted to Managing Director in 2022, stepped down from that position last year, and now serves as an advisor to Sequoia.
Since 2019, Sequoia Capital has invested in SpaceX, currently holding nearly 1.5% of the shares, valued at approximately $35 billion. Additionally, Sequoia has invested in Neuralink, The Boring Company, and participated in Musk's leveraged buyout of Twitter (now X).
However, Botha's joining the SpaceX board does not represent Sequoia Capital; the firm's main investment partner in SpaceX is Shaun Maguire. When Botha resigned from Sequoia's oversight last year, the company was embroiled in controversy.
According to foreign media reports, former colleagues have criticized Botha's management style, and he has been widely accused of making "Islamophobic" remarks in defending Maguire, which has caused dissatisfaction among some investors.
Currently, Musk controls over 82% of SpaceX's voting rights and holds stock worth more than $1 trillion, a scale of ownership that limits external shareholders' influence over the company's decisions.
