According to the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Maryland, Miami, Florida man Rodney “Bitcoin Rodney” Burton has pleaded guilty in federal court, admitting to conspiracy to operate an unlicensed remittance business in connection with promoting the HyperFund cryptocurrency scam. Prosecutors state that HyperFund claimed to be a legitimate cryptocurrency investment platform, but in reality was a global wire fraud scheme, obtaining $1.8 billion from victims worldwide. Burton personally received at least $7.8517 million in proceeds and faces a maximum of 5 years in federal prison, with sentencing scheduled for July 23.
