Dalić’s Lucky Calculation—Can the 5-4-1 Iron Bucket Formation Steal a Point?
Croatian head coach Dalić isn’t an idiot. He knows his team’s strength is not as good as England’s, and that the veterans’ physical stamina can’t last for the whole match. His strategy is very clear: a 5-4-1 low-block defense, giving up possession, and strictly controlling the middle.
Cut off the link between Bellingham and Kane, so that England’s attacking core ends up fighting on its own. After waiting for the English full-backs to push up to provide support, Perišić and Kramarić launch quick counterattacks. This is the textbook tactic of “a weaker team playing against a stronger team”—I won’t trade blows with you directly; I’ll just stand firm and defend stubbornly. If I can steal one goal, I’ll steal one. If I can’t, then settling for a point is also fine.
Croatia has recently tried a back three formation in warm-up matches, but the results were not good: they lost 0-2 to Belgium. For the last warm-up match, Dalić changed back to a four-defender system. Constantly switching formations before the tournament suggests that even Dalić himself hasn’t found the most stable defensive plan.
In addition, Croatian forward Musa plays for MLS’s FC Dallas and is very familiar with this stadium. If the match is still level when it enters the closing stages, Musa could appear as an impact substitute, using his familiarity with the pitch to create threats. But the problem is: how many counterattacking chances can Croatia create in the entire match? It might not even be three. How long can the 5-4-1 formation hold? That’s the biggest uncertainty in this game.
