Midfield Stranglehold — Can Rice + Anderson Lock Down Modric?
The key to the England vs. Croatia match lies in the midfield. Whoever controls the midfield, controls the pace of the game.
England's midfield duo is Rice and Anderson. Rice is the defensive barrier with strong sweeping ability; Anderson is the pivot for attack and defense transitions. Their chemistry has been repeatedly tested in the Premier League. Their task is clear: cut off the connection between Modric and Kovacic, preventing Croatia’s midfield from comfortably receiving and distributing the ball.
On Croatia’s side, Modric and Kovacic remain the midfield core. But the problem is, one is 40 years old and the other 32, and facing England’s young high-pressing midfield, their stamina will drain quickly. Once Modric’s energy drops, Croatia’s attacking organization will stall, relying only on long balls to the forwards — which is nearly impossible under the coverage of Rice and Anderson.
Croatia’s counter-strategy is to tighten the central area, using dense defense to cut off Bellingham and Kane’s connection. But if Modric is restricted, Croatia can’t even organize a counterattack, let alone score. In this midfield battle, I favor England’s young double sixes to come out on top.
