After watching Spain vs. Cape Verde, I was truly surprised by this dark horse.

Before the match, I really thought it would be a one-sided blowout; Spain is at least a strong European team, with a lineup full of La Liga stars, while Cape Verde is a small country playing in the World Cup for the first time, and not many people expected them to score points.
The result was completely unexpected; Spain dominated possession, took a bunch of shots, and kept passing around the opponent’s penalty area, but just couldn’t score.
It felt like the whole team was a bit complacent, playing slowly, facing a dense bus defense, without a tall striker, and every shot on goal was just a breath away from success, wasting many great opportunities.
In contrast, Cape Verde was very determined, everyone honestly stayed in the penalty area to defend, didn’t run around or tackle recklessly, and their defensive line was very well coordinated.
Their goalkeeper was even the best player on the field, making all kinds of incredible saves, literally blocking every shot from Spain.
The team didn’t try to compete with Spain in passing and possession, focusing solely on defense, occasionally launching quick counterattacks, and stubbornly holding the draw.
This draw directly exposed Spain’s problems: they only know how to pass and control, and when faced with a solid defense, they have no other way to break through; their finishing ability is too poor.
What should have been a sure three points turned into just one, and the pressure to advance in the group stage suddenly increased, making them realize they can’t underestimate any weak team anymore.
I have to say, football is really full of drama; a team’s value and world ranking can never determine the outcome of a match.
A small country with a limited population, relying on the team’s relentless fighting spirit, managed to draw against a European powerhouse, and that’s probably the most charming part of football.
