The leaders of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have reached an agreement on comprehensive housing legislation, which includes a provision in the updated 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act that bans the issuance of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). The bill explicitly states that the Federal Reserve is prohibited from issuing or creating CBDCs or any digital assets that are "substantially similar" to them, and this ban will remain in effect until December 31, 2030. Although adding anti-CBDC provisions to housing legislation is relatively rare, this reflects the legislative strategy promoted by House Republicans, and the current Trump administration also firmly opposes CBDCs.
