All night long, Mbappé broke record after record
As a heavy favorite to win the title, France’s 3-1 opener still left the French people habitually dissatisfied. RMC said bluntly: “France didn’t play well, but France still won.” If the French had a touch of pride in this victory, then for Mbappé—who scored twice and created a national-team goal-scoring record—they were completely in awe: “A record from a new era has been born.”
France routs Senegal 3-1 in revenge
Facing an opponent who had once shocked them by beating them in the first match of the World Cup, France did not repeat the same mistake.
In the early hours of June 17 Beijing time, France played their first World Cup match, facing Senegal. Les Bleus won the opening game 3-1.
In the 25th minute, the African powerhouse had once sent the French into a cold sweat. Mbappé was dispossessed in the front third, and Senegal launched a counterattack, but Jackson’s shot after getting into the penalty area hit the post—saving the French. Then, in first-half stoppage time, Sal again missed a chance in front of goal for Senegal.
Throughout the first half, France’s performance failed to satisfy fans. They were behind 1-5 in shots, and their expected goals were only 0.02. However, after halftime, France finally snapped out of it and found their rhythm.
After missing a one-on-one chance in the 57th minute, Mbappé finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Olisse sent a through ball to set up the France captain’s shot for a goal, giving France the lead.
In the 82nd minute, Barkla—who had just come on as a substitute two minutes earlier—also chipped in to extend France’s advantage. At 23 years and 287 days old, he became the youngest French player to score on World Cup debut, after Henry.
But the goals kept coming. During stoppage time for injuries and delays, substitute forward Mbaye feinted past TheoÉau and struck a shot with power to pull Senegal back. Then Mbappé fired a world-class effort from outside the penalty area, fixing the score at 3-1.
In 2002, France also faced Senegal in their World Cup opener, only to suffer an upset 0-1 loss. France then bowed out at the group stage in that tournament, while Senegal advanced all the way to the quarterfinals.
Now meeting again on the World Cup stage for the second time, France did not allow the tragedy to repeat itself.
Mbappé “revived” in the World Cup
Although he won the La Liga Golden Boot with Real Madrid last season, when Mbappé faced the World Cup for the second time after experiencing the “four trophies, all empty” club honor situation, his performances have continued to be criticized by outsiders.
However, once he arrived at the World Cup stage, Mbappé immediately “fully revived” with a brace.
In the first half, Mbappé had the awkward numbers of 0 shots and 3 failed dribble attempts, and he lost possession 7 times—but his two goals in the second half not only made him score in three consecutive World Cups. His total World Cup goals also reached 14, surpassing Messi and tying with Gerd Müller for third place on the World Cup all-time top scorers list.
On that list, Mbappé is behind Brazilian star Ronaldo, who has 15 goals, and German legend Klose, who has 16. With just two goals separating him from the top spot, Mbappé has a chance to take the lead in this World Cup.
At the same time, Mbappé’s total national-team goals have risen to 58, surpassing Giroud’s 57, crowning him France’s all-time top scorer. In major tournaments (World Cup + European Championship), Mbappé’s 15 goals surpassed Platini, making him France’s all-time top scorer in major tournaments.
After the match, Giroud posted his congratulations to Mbappé on social media right away. Mbappé’s reply was: “Thank you, legend.” In the eyes of the French, Mbappé is already ready to usher in a new era.
After the game, Mbappé also stated in an interview, “I don’t think we’ve completely started yet, but it’s always a good thing to get a win in the opening game of a major tournament. We’ve seen how other teams are doing—winning the first match is very difficult, and everyone wants to win.”
“This game wasn’t easy today. We know we can score at any moment, and that’s very helpful.” The French captain also responded to recent outside criticism: “There’s no such thing as revenge. If I played just to respond to the people criticizing me, just to shut them up, I’d be playing until I’m 80.”
“I play to leave a mark in our country’s history, so that my team can win the World Cup. It’s only a group-stage match. We must always stay calm about what we need to do.”
However, the player of the match award was not given to Mbappé. His teammate Olisse was named player of the match. In the second half, Olisse, who took over the game, showcased his attacking talent—delivering 4 key passes, creating 2 scoring opportunities, and contributing 1 assist.
