Japanese yen short positions hit a nine-year high, as traders keep a close watch on the Bank of Japan’s interest-rate decision this Tuesday
According to CoinDesk, Bitcoin traders are closely watching the Bank of Japan (BOJ) interest-rate decision this Tuesday, alongside yen speculative short positions reaching a nine-year high. This meeting could be an important macro variable affecting the crypto market’s short-term direction.
At present, the market broadly believes that the BOJ’s interest-rate decision this time will raise the benchmark rate from 0.75% to 1%, which would also make the BOJ’s policy rate the highest level since 1995.
Also, according to CFTC data, as of the week ending June 9, leveraged funds’ yen speculative short positions increased to more than 115,000 contracts, reaching a new high since November 2017.
As a result, if the BOJ raises rates as expected and releases further tightening signals, it could trigger a large-scale unwinding of these bets on a weaker yen shorts, causing the yen to surge rapidly stronger.
Not only that, this move could directly impact yen-funded carry trades that invest borrowed yen into high-yield risk assets. Carry trades are widely believed to be an important source of hidden capital flows supporting the cryptocurrency market in recent years.
Historical experience shows that the unwinding of carry trades can significantly affect risk assets. For example, after the BOJ’s rate hike in late July 2024, the rapid unwinding of yen shorts led to a sharp surge in the yen, while Bitcoin plunged from about $65,000 to $50,000 within a week.
In summary, if the BOJ releases signals of accelerated tightening or implies that rates will be far above 1%, the current pattern could repeat once again. For the crypto market—especially sensitive to liquidity conditions—it may become one of the asset sectors most severely affected.
Therefore, as a Bitcoin trader, besides keeping an eye on technical market trends, you also need to closely monitor the interest-rate decision, the yen exchange rate, and fund unwinding activity to judge short-term price direction and risk changes, so as to formulate a more prudent trading strategy.
