Coinbase Freezes $3M Linked to Southeast Asia Crypto Fraud Rings
International law enforcement agencies recently dismantled a massive industrial cybercrime network in Southeast Asia.
Notably, the digital asset exchange Coinbase took proactive measures, freezing $3 million in illicit funds tied directly to these predatory networks.
Coinbase Enhances Sovereign Enforcement Efforts
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) used its newly formed Scam Center Strike Force to coordinate this massive-scale crackdown.
As a result, federal authorities have frozen about $701 million in cryptocurrency assets, thanks to the effective application of the law.
The milestone was achieved through a lot of cooperation and voluntary compliance from the major digital asset exchanges, especially in technical matters.
Specifically, the targeted internal investigative measures deployed by Coinbase directly isolated funds linked to the laundering of stolen victim capital.
In addition, the sovereign governments carried out strategic structural takedowns throughout the digital infrastructure these transnational fraud syndicates used.
Law enforcement successfully seized 503 fraudulent investment web domains designed to mimic legitimate institutions.
Visitors trying to access these malicious applications now encounter official government seizure notices instead of fake asset dashboards.
Moreover, investigators have shut down one of the most popular Telegram recruitment channels, which had more than 6,000 active followers on the platform.
Transnational Architecture and Global Investigations
The operation also included Meta, Microsoft, and Starlink, who collaborated to shut down servers and other hosting infrastructure linked to scam networks and disrupt criminal activity across more than 1.4 million social media and email accounts.
This resulted in several arrests by the Royal Thai Police Anti-Cyber Scam Center.
The chase by Thai law enforcement officers finally ended with them being arrested for immigration violations as they tried to cross borders.
The U.S. State Department offered a reward of $10 million to speed up the breaking of these networks.
The reward is for “actionable intelligence” that helps to disrupt the major Tai Chang scam centers.
This significant monetary award underscores Washington’s perception of these activities as well-organized and international criminal schemes.
Furthermore, blockchain data shows that these illegal entities seem to be continuing to branch out on other layer-1 networks.
Coinbase Collaborates on Parallel Operations
At the same time, the Singapore Police Force launched an intensive month-long parallel operation to stop capital moving.
This regional enforcement effort succeeded in stopping more than $2.86 million of dollars from being lost in the near future.
The Anti-Scam Centre introduced quick channels of communication between the specialised institutional bodies and Coinbase and Gemini.
Blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis and TRM Labs provided real-time on-chain tracking to identify compromised addresses.
This integration resulted in 90 direct interventions with victims to stop further flights for capital.
At the same time, Coinbase’s compliance teams modified their algorithm for automated transaction monitoring to identify and flag syndicates impersonating customer service agents.
